San Francisco, April 4, 2011 - On April 8, IJCR Executive Vice President Kenneth L. Marcus will co-convene a major academic conference at Loyola University Chicago on "Hate Speech, Incitement, and Genocide." The conference will highlight legal efforts to prosecute the perpetrators of the genocide in Rwanda, Darfur and the former Yugoslavia, as well as consider the repercussions of failing to confront incitement to genocide in Iran and elsewhere in the Middle East.
"Given the dangerous situation in the Middle East today, in which demagogues like Mahmoud Ahmadinejad are able to issue genocidal threats against the State of Israel with impunity," Marcus commented, "it is important to remember the lessons of the past and to take action before it is too late."
The conference, co-convened by Marcus and Loyola Chicago law professor Alexander Tsesis, will be hosted by the Loyola University Chicago's law school and its law review. Former Canadian Minister of Justice Irwin Cotler, a leader in efforts to hold Ahmadinejad culpable for inciting genocide against the Jewish state, will deliver the keynote address. The major sessions will include "Developing a Legal Structure for Incitement and Genocide," "Hate Speech and Genocide in Africa and the Middle East," and "Free Speech and Equality in the Internet Age."
